What goals and success metrics would you set for buy & sell groups?

What is the product?

Buy/Sell groups is primarily a group formed locally for each area where people can post product to sell and interested people can interact & connect with sellers on comments or something else

Mission: Empower people to buy & sell conveniently and connect with each other.

Stage of the product & its purpose

Groups has been there for a while. FB has also launched marketplace seeing the trend on buy/sell in groups. Groups acts as a marketing mechanism for people who post on marketplace.

Sellers primary goal is to drive awareness on their product and get the product sold quickly.

Buyers primary goal is to discover products quickly.

User journey

Seller

Upload product photo & details — post — gets comments — interacts on messenger — marks it as sold and removes the post

Buyer

Searches for product — identifies a group → interacts with user → buys

Metrics

User level

  • Weekly active buyer (Discover and interacts with at least 1 product)
  • Weekly active seller (Posts at least one product on weekly basis)

Why weekly? My assumption is people won’t come daily to shop. They usually post or interact on weekends so would try to keep the metric focused on weekly.

User value

  • #products sold or bought via groups WoW, DoD,MoM(Tracked as people who mark it as “sold”)

People might also remove the product themselves from the group. It's a bit tricky to track whether the product was sold on fb or somewhere else.

Product level

  • Weekly active listings (Active= at least 2 interactions per listing between buyer and seller)
  • Weekly Active groups (Active= 2 posts per week)
  • Active buyer/active seller ratio

I would prioritize the metrics based on mission alignment, how easy it is track and rally the teams around it, and user value (Whether it truly depicts the value of the product)

Based on this priority I think north star could be

  • North Star: Weekly Active Listings

Risks:

If weekly active listings go up, there could be situations where the post won't be legitimate or people might be reporting as fraud.

  • Counter metric: #Scam Listings

Company level Metric

At Facebook level, I want to make sure we don't cannibalize other commerce specific features like Marketplace. To ensure that, I would keep track of LTV.
